Lynyrd Skynrd vs. REM

Skynrd defined/started/put Southern Rock on the map. Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama. You don't get much bigger than that.

REM pretty much single-handedly gave birth to the college rock scene in the 90s, which gave birth to "alternative" and all that alternative has become-- including, arguably, Nirvana, the hugest of the huge in the past 20 years.

So who is bigger?

I'm confused. Is this between Skynrd and REM, or Skynrd and Nirvana?

Hmmmm ... the "REM gave birth to college/alternative rock" take sounds verrrry familiar to my take in an e-mail exchange you, me, and Polsky had about REM vs. the Police several years ago.

I believe I used the Red Hots as an example as opposed to Nirvana.

Speaking of the Police, anyone interested in 2 tickets to the Police in Philly on July 19?

...so Jkhan was the originator of the "REM gave birth to alternative rock" idea, eh? No other DJ, critic, or fan ever thought of that. I suppose next you'll tell me that you were the first to say that the Stones are the progenitors of "bad boy" rock?

I was the first, in fact. When I was a gleam in my father's eye.
