De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest

Both were supposed saviors of hip-hop from gangsta/sucka MC stylings. Both integrated jazz and mellow grooves into their playing. Both have more or less faded away since the 90s. So who is bigger?

I say Tribe is bigger, cause it feels like they had more influence and Q-Tip went on to collaborate with more artists, seems like maybe he grew the medium and grew with the medium.

But then again I don't really know hip hop so good. Anybody care to enlighten?

Tribe called Quest is a personal favorite but I would vote for De La Soul. True, Q-Tip appears here and there but I would argue that more people recognize De La Soul.

And using the "can you whistle it" method, the prize would have to go to De La Soul...."Hey, how you doin' sorry you can't get through, why don't you leave your name and your number...and I'll get back to you."

I love how De La Soul sampled Paul McCartney's "Simply, having, a wonderful time...". That track (De La Soul's) is classic.

I don't know enough about Tribe to compare though.

That's a tough one Shugrue. I might have to lean towards De
La just because they came out a minute before Tribe did and
really flipped the script ("black medallians, no gold"). Sure
Tip is a bigger individual presence than anyone from de la,
but that is their beauty - a true hip-hop group with no one
rising above the others. I'd say they each put out 3 solid
records, and then who knows, although de la is still around
and still put out a great song from time to time.
Of course maybe it's the Jungle Brothers who deserve the real
credit for starting the Native Tongues - didn't they?

Who the hell knows Dan

If you're going to remove my comments I'll just pick up my comedy and go home.

Lighten up, man. A little too serious for me around here.

JP is right, time to lighten up. I'm trying to "unhide" his comment, but can't seem to figure it out. Anyone happen to know how this blogspot thing works?

That's OK. I didn't really have an opinion about the two bands, so I made a stupid joke.
